Perhaps even more important, if we want to look ahead a bit, Wright’s on an expiring $8.5 million deal, which could make him an intriguing trade option ahead of the deadline, especially if the Hawks want to move Cooper into the backup role and offer him a guaranteed contract.įor the Kings and Pistons last season, Wright shot 37 percent from 3 on nearly three attempts per game. Wright should bring stability to that second unit, and he has the size to play with Young in certain lineups too. Lin, Adams, Turner, Teague and Goodwin are currently not rostered. This is the list of backups the Hawks have had the past three seasons: Jeremy Lin, Jaylen Adams, Evan Turner, Jeff Teague, Brandon Goodwin, Rajon Rondo and Lou Williams.

Release the confetti! Seriously though, this is important because it’s been a glaring weakness since 2018. I’m encouraged by the potential of the second unit, mainly because the Hawks should finally have consistent adequate backup point guard play for the first time in the Young era.

Young is what he is defensively, but a little more friskiness could go a long way. The other side of the floor still needs work, but a lot of the issues we saw from them could improve dramatically if Hunter can stay healthy and Collins continues improving in perimeter defense. They have one of the best point guards in Young, excellent secondary creators in Bogdanovic and Hunter, a modern stretch four who happens to be one of the best rim runners in Collins and a good roller in Capela. There isn’t one player who’s like a puzzle piece you’re trying to jam in because you’re convinced it’s in the right spot. What I like about this five is that they all fit seamlessly. If Hunter can return and look like the player we saw at the beginning of last season, this five-man group is deadly. Count me in the cautious group when it comes to Hunter because there’s no way to not be at least a bit concerned that he had two surgeries done on his knee. Schlenk said Hunter is expected to be cleared and ready to go by the start of camp. The wild card here is Hunter, of course, because he is still rehabbing from his second meniscus surgery this year. With training camp starting at the end of September, this is what I believe the depth chart will look like going into camp.
Hawks roster free#
They re-signed John Collins and Lou Williams in free agency, secured Trae Young’s future with a max extension, acquired Delon Wright through trade and signed Gorgui Dieng from Minnesota.īarring injury, there shouldn’t be any surprises with the starting rotation entering next season.

He also mentioned having flexibility with the roster spot going into the trade deadline.Īfter advancing to the Eastern Conference finals last season and being two wins away from the NBA Finals, the Hawks are mostly running back the same roster. If they do fill it any time soon, he said another big man could get added with a non-guaranteed contract, just like what the team did last season with Solomon Hill. Schlenk said the Hawks are going to hold at 14 spots for as long as they can because they are approaching the luxury tax. Mays played well in Las Vegas and is deserving of an actual roster spot, so it’s likely he will wait as long as possible to see if he can get a guaranteed contract before deciding on the two-way offer. The Hawks have extended a qualifying offer to Skylar Mays, who could return to the team and fill the second two-way spot next to Cooper. General manager Travis Schlenk has clearly prioritized having as much depth as possible to account for the wear and tear of an NBA season, which was the case for the Hawks this past year when nearly every important player missed at least 10 games due to various injuries.Ītlanta’s roster for the upcoming season is mostly set, though the Hawks do have their 15th roster spot unfilled and a two-way spot open. When looking at the roster ahead of training camp, it’s wild to think both Johnson and Cooper might not see much playing time this season if everyone can stay mostly healthy (which is a big ask).
